The Day 10–14 Window for Blight Prevention:

Phytophthora colocasiae spores germinate in warm (25–30°C), wet soil and begin ascending the stem to infect leaves in the second week of monsoon. The fungal colony is already present in most Indian garden soil — it is kept dormant by dry conditions. By Day 12, conditions have been optimal for spore germination for long enough that a preventive copper spray now costs almost nothing compared to losing the entire leaf canopy in 5 days if blight establishes.

Day 12 Preventive Spray Protocol: Even if no symptoms are visible, apply copper oxychloride at 2g per litre — spray the underside of all leaves (where spores land from soil splash), the petioles, and the soil surface around the plant base. Repeat at Day 19 and Day 26. This 3-spray window covers the highest-risk period of early monsoon blight establishment.

Corm Development Check (Day 12):

Arbi planted from corms in May–June should have the following by Day 12:

  • Planted from corm: 2–4 leaves open, 20–40 cm petiole height, corm actively spreading lateral cormel roots underground.
  • Planted from sucker/offset: Faster — may already be 40–60 cm with 4–6 leaves in active monsoon conditions.

If leaf expansion has stalled or the plant looks the same as Day 7, check the drainage situation. Arbi loves moisture but not stagnant anaerobic conditions — if the container has no drainage holes or is sealed at the base, the corm development will stall even though the plant appears alive.

What NOT to do at Day 12: Do not apply nitrogen fertiliser — the monsoon flush of organic matter in soil provides adequate nutrition. Excess nitrogen creates lush, tender leaf tissue that Phytophthora infects more easily. Do not overhead water — let rain do the work, but direct any supplemental watering to the soil base only.
