How to Grow Arvi (Taro / Colocasia) at Home in India — Sow Before the Monsoon
Arvi is the most underrated vegetable in the Indian home garden.
It grows in shade. It grows in monsoon waterlogging. It grows in a clay pot on your balcony with almost zero care. You eat both the corms (the roots) and the big, dramatic leaves. And in most of India, the sowing window is right now — May to mid-June, before the monsoon arrives.
If you grow karela and lauki but skip arvi, you're missing the easiest crop of the kharif season.
What Is Arvi? Regional Names Across India

The botanical name is Colocasia esculenta — the same plant sold internationally as taro, dasheen, or eddo. In the West, it is primarily an ornamental plant grown for its dramatic elephant-ear leaves. In India, it is a kitchen crop.
Why Grow Arvi at Home?
1. It is genuinely low maintenance. Unlike karela (which needs trellising and hand pollination) or lauki (which needs a huge container), arvi needs: one corm, one 15-litre pot, and occasional water. That is it.
2. You get two harvests. Arvi gives you edible leaves (arbi ke patte) within 8–10 weeks, and corms at 5–7 months. The leaves alone — cooked into a curry or used to make patra — make growing it worthwhile even before the corm harvest.
3. It grows in shade. Most Indian balcony vegetables need 6–8 hours of direct sun. Arvi does well with 4–5 hours of sun or even bright indirect light. North-facing balconies, which struggle with most kharif vegetables, are excellent for arvi.
4. It loves monsoon conditions. While most plants suffer from overwatering in monsoon, arvi is native to wet tropical environments. Heavy rainfall and humid conditions are exactly what it prefers. A plant that thrives in your worst monsoon conditions is worth growing.
5. Sabzi mandi prices spike in monsoon. Arbi corms become expensive in the vegetable market by September. Growing your own means abundance during precisely the season when supply is strained.
When to Sow Arvi in India
The ideal window is May 1 – June 15. Sow now, before the monsoon fully arrives.
Here is why timing matters: arvi corms need 3–4 weeks of warm, moist-but-not-waterlogged soil to establish roots and send up their first shoots. If you plant directly into peak monsoon soil (late June or July), the corm sits in saturated soil before it has roots — and can rot.
Pre-monsoon planting gives the corm time to establish drainage. By July, when heavy rain arrives, the plant has an active root system that handles the wet conditions easily.

What You Need to Start
Planting material: Arvi does not grow from seed — it grows from corms (the root tubers). Source them from:
- Your local sabzi mandi / vegetable market. Buy fresh arbi corms (not shrivelled or dried out) — the same ones sold for cooking. Look for corms with small pink-green sprouting eyes visible.
- A nursery that sells kitchen garden planting material. In May–June, many nurseries stock arbi corms alongside bhindi and gourd seeds.
- A neighbour who grew arbi last season — they will have excess corms from the harvest.
Choose medium-sized corms (4–6 cm diameter). Very small corms take longer to establish. Very large corms (the large mother corm from a full-grown plant) work well but take more space.
What you will need:
- 1 corm per pot (or 2 per large container)
- 15–20 litre pot or grow bag (for container growing)
- Potting mix: 50% garden soil + 30% compost/vermicompost + 20% cocopeat
- A location with 4–6 hours of sun (more forgiving than most vegetables)
Planting Step by Step
Step 1: Choose your container
A 15-litre pot works for one plant. A 25-litre grow bag can support 2 corms planted 20 cm apart. For ground beds, space corms 30–40 cm apart in rows 45–60 cm apart.
Step 2: Prepare the soil
Arvi prefers soil that retains moisture but does not waterlog. The compost + cocopeat combination achieves this. Add one handful of neem cake to suppress soil fungi — arvi corms can develop rot in waterlogged soil and neem cake helps prevent it.
Step 3: Plant the corm
Place the corm 5–7 cm deep with the pointed sprouting tip facing upward. Cover with soil, water lightly. If you are not sure which end is up, look for the small purple-pink eyes — these point upward.
Step 4: Water in
Give a thorough watering after planting. In May–June, the soil dries quickly. Water every 2–3 days until the monsoon starts; then allow natural rainfall to take over.
Step 5: Watch for first shoots
Shoots emerge in 15–25 days. The first leaves are small and rolled — they unfurl into the characteristic elephant-ear shape over the next 2–3 weeks. Once shoots appear, the corm has successfully established.
Kerala Monsoon 2026 Post-Onset: Arvi Care Week 1
Kerala monsoon arrived May 26, 2026 — 5 days early. Arvi is uniquely well-suited to monsoon conditions, but post-onset week 1 requires specific actions to prevent corm rot before roots establish.
If you just planted (within the last 2–3 weeks):
The corm is still developing its root system. In heavy monsoon rain, the main risk is Pythium corm rot — the corm sits in saturated soil before it has the roots to drain excess moisture.

You are in the good zone. Arvi now welcomes the monsoon. Reduce or stop supplemental watering entirely. The main ongoing threat is the taro leaf caterpillar (Spodoptera litura) — check leaf undersides weekly and apply neem oil spray at first sign.
Corm rot diagnostic: Sudden wilting and yellowing of the main shoot despite wet soil = possible Pythium corm rot. Unpot the plant — a rotten corm is brown, soft, and water-soaked at the base. Healthy corms are firm and cream-white inside. If rot is partial, cut away the affected portion, dust with copper oxychloride (Blitox 50 WP, 2 g per litre), let dry 24 hours, and replant in fresh mix.
Ongoing Care Through the Monsoon
Watering: Once the monsoon starts, arvi typically needs no supplemental watering. If you are in a dry June, water every 3–4 days. In containers, check that water flows freely through drainage holes — arvi tolerates moisture but not stagnant waterlogging in a sealed container.
Fertiliser: Apply a handful of vermicompost as a side dressing in July when the plants are 30–40 cm tall. Arvi is not a heavy feeder — one application mid-season is enough.
Pest watch: The main pest on arvi leaves is the taro caterpillar (Spodoptera litura), which cuts semicircular holes in the leaves. It is cosmetically unpleasant but rarely kills the plant. A neem oil spray (5 ml neem oil + 2 ml dish soap + 1 litre water) on leaf undersides controls the population. Check leaves every 2 weeks through the monsoon.
Leaves: Do not remove healthy leaves — they are the plant's food factory. You can harvest a few outer leaves for cooking once the plant has 6–8 leaves, but leave the inner whorl intact. The large, mature outer leaves are the ones traditionally used for patra/patrode recipes.
Harvesting Arvi
Leaves: Harvest any time after the plant has 6+ leaves. Take outer leaves only; the inner growing point continues producing new leaves. Arvi leaves must be cooked thoroughly — they contain calcium oxalate crystals that cause throat irritation if eaten raw or undercooked. Always pressure cook or boil well.
Corms: The main harvest is 5–7 months after planting (October–November in most of India). Signs of maturity: leaves start yellowing and dying back. Pull the entire plant out of the container or bed — you will find the large mother corm surrounded by several smaller daughter corms.
Seed saving: Keep 3–4 healthy medium daughter corms for next year's planting. Store in a cool, dry, shaded location (a newspaper-wrapped bundle in your kitchen's coolest shelf works). Replant the following May.
Arvi for North-Facing Balconies
Arvi is one of the best options for north-facing balconies in India — a type of outdoor space that frustrates most home gardeners.
Most kharif vegetables (bhindi, karela, lauki, pumpkin) need 6–8 hours of direct sun. On a north-facing balcony, you may only get 3–4 hours of morning or indirect light. Arvi thrives in these conditions. It has evolved in the shade of forest understories and tropical canopy — your north balcony is familiar territory.

FAQ
Can I grow arvi from the corms I buy at the sabzi mandi?
Yes — market arbi corms are viable planting material. Buy fresh, firm corms with visible sprouting eyes. Avoid corms that are shrivelled, soft, or have visible mould. The pink-purple sprouting eyes are the growth points — a corm with no visible eyes will still sprout but takes longer. Let market corms sit at room temperature for 2–3 days before planting so the cut surface (if any) dries and seals.
My arvi leaves have holes cut into them in a semicircle. What is causing this?
This is the taro caterpillar (Spodoptera litura) — it feeds at night and rests in soil during the day. The damage is cosmetic and rarely threatens the plant. Spray neem oil (5 ml + 2 ml dish soap per litre of water) on leaf undersides in the evening. Two applications a week apart controls the population. If infestation is heavy, check soil near the base for pupae and remove.
How long does arvi take to produce corms?
Arvi takes 5–7 months to produce harvestable corms. Planted in May, you can expect to harvest in October–November when leaves start dying back naturally. The leaves are ready from about 8–10 weeks after sprouting. Do not try to harvest corms early — they are small and starchy-hard before full maturity.
Is arvi the same as taro?
Yes. Arvi (Hindi: अरवी) and taro are the same plant: Colocasia esculenta. Taro is the Hawaiian and Pacific name. In India it goes by arvi/arbi (North), kochu (Bengal), chembu (Kerala/Tamil Nadu), chamadumpa (Andhra), and kesuvina gadde (Karnataka). Can arvi be grown in a container?

Arvi / Taro Monsoon Week 2 Checkpoint (Jun 8–20)
Monsoon Week 2 (June 8–20) is the most important fortnight for arvi (taro / colocasia / arbi) planted in May–early June. Corms planted 3–5 weeks ago are now in the root establishment phase — the point at which waterlogged containers most commonly cause root rot and sprout death, and also the point where successfully established plants begin their fastest leaf-growth phase. Where Your Arvi Should Be Right Now (by planting date)
May 1–15 plantings (4–5 weeks old): These are your most advanced arvi plants. After 4–5 weeks in warm monsoon soil, they should have produced 2–4 large unfurling leaves and the corm should be firmly rooted. The classic arvi leaf — large, dark green, heart-shaped with prominent veins — should be clearly visible. Week 2 action: Top-dress with a thin layer of compost (2–3 cm) around the base without touching the stem. This feeds the plant without chemical fertiliser and maintains soil moisture. If leaves are still just rolled spikes at this stage, investigate — the corm may be waterlogged or rotting.
May 15–31 plantings (2–3 weeks old): These should show the first sprout above soil level — typically a single rolled green spike, 5–15 cm tall, the first leaf still furled. Week 2 action: This is the maximum waterlogging risk window — a new sprout with no established roots cannot uptake water and relies on the corm's stored energy. Ensure drainage is excellent. Probe the soil with a finger: damp is fine; muddy-saturated is dangerous. Elevate the pot on bricks if your terrace drains slowly.
Early June plantings (0–14 days old): Very recently planted corms in the pre-sprout phase. Week 2 action: no intervention needed beyond ensuring drainage. Arvi corms typically sprout in 10–21 days in monsoon-warm soil. If nothing is visible at Day 14, gently probe the soil surface near the corm — you should feel a small pink bud. If the corm feels soft or smells off, it may have rotted; retrieve and replace with a fresh corm.
Week 2 Waterlogging Alert for Arvi
Arvi is more waterlogging-tolerant than most Indian kharif vegetables — it grows wild in wet riverbank conditions — but container-grown arvi has a critical limitation: the corm cannot tolerate sitting in saturated, airless soil for 48+ hours. Field-grown arvi drains freely; containers trap water.
- Drainage test: After heavy rain, water should drain from the pot within 5 minutes; if not, drainage is blocked

- Harvest outer leaves only — leave the 2–3 innermost rolled leaves intact to allow continuous growth
- The inner growing point (the central bud) must never be cut — this is the plant's only growing tip

Week 2 Taro Caterpillar Watch
Spodoptera litura (taro caterpillar) is most active in Week 2's warm, humid conditions. It feeds at night and creates characteristic semicircular bite marks on leaf margins:
- Inspection: Check leaf undersides and soil surface near the pot base after dark with a torch
- Action: Handpick any caterpillars found; apply neem oil (5ml/L + 2ml dish soap) on leaf undersides every 5 days

Realistic Arvi Week 2 Harvest Expectations
Corm harvest: There is no corm harvest in Week 2. Arvi takes 5–7 months from planting — corm harvest is in October–November when leaves begin dying back naturally.
Leaf harvest: Possible for April–early May plantings if leaves are 20+ cm and fully unfurled. Mid-May plantings have 3–4 more weeks before leaf harvest.
What a healthy Week 2 arvi plant looks like: May-planted — 2–4 large unfurled leaves (20–30 cm across), dark green, upright, with the characteristic heart shape and prominent central vein. The stem (petiole) should be firm and upright, not soft or wilting. A new rolled leaf emerging from the centre is the best indicator of active, healthy growth. If this is what you see, your arvi is on track for a productive October–November corm harvest.
Arvi (Taro) Monsoon Week 3 Checkpoint (Jun 21 – Jul 4)
Monsoon Week 3 (June 21 – July 4) is the most important vegetative growth window for arvi planted in May and June. By this period, the monsoon is in full force across most of India — sustained rainfall and high humidity create ideal colocasia growing conditions. The corm is actively expanding underground, and leaf production is at its highest rate of the season. Week 3 tasks are about protecting this momentum: drainage vigilance, pest monitoring, and ensuring the plant can channel energy into corm development.
Arvi Status by Stage — Week 3 Reality Check
Arvi planted in April (70–90 days old): April-planted arvi should be a well-established, large-leafed plant by Week 3. Expect 5–8 leaves with the largest measuring 30–45 cm across. New leaves should be emerging from the centre consistently — one new leaf every 7–10 days is ideal in peak monsoon conditions. Week 3 check: Is every new leaf larger than the last? If yes, the corm is expanding well. If new leaves are coming in progressively smaller, there is a root zone issue — most likely intermittent waterlogging that is restricting root function without causing outright rot.
Arvi planted in May (35–55 days old): The May batch is entering its most active phase. These plants should have 3–5 leaves with a visible new leaf rolling up from the centre. Week 3 check: Measure the height of the tallest petiole — it should be 40–70 cm by Week 3. If petioles are under 30 cm and the plant looks stunted, assess the root zone for compaction or waterlogging. A healthy May-planted arvi at this stage is growing visibly — you can measure the growth over 3–4 days.
Arvi planted in early June (15–25 days old): Early June plantings are completing their establishment phase. Week 3 check: 1–3 leaves on firm petioles, with the central bud actively pushing a new rolled leaf. The corm should be fully rooted by now — if you gently tug the plant, there should be resistance (indicating roots have anchored). No resistance plus yellowing suggests the corm failed to establish; probe and replace if soft.
Week 3 Corm Development Support
Week 3 is a good window to begin shifting the plant's nutrition from vegetative to storage development:
- Potassium application: Apply one dose of wood ash tea (handful of ash steeped in 1L water overnight, strained) or potassium sulphate (1g/L) as a soil drench. Potassium directly supports corm expansion and starch deposition.
- Phosphorus check: If leaves are dark green but growth seems slow, a single application of bone meal or DAP (1 tsp per pot) supports root and corm development.
- Avoid nitrogen: Nitrogen in Week 3 pushes leaf growth at the expense of the corm. The plant has enough vegetative mass — redirect energy underground.
Week 3 Leaf Harvest (April-Planted Plants)
April-planted arvi with 6+ leaves can yield a culinary harvest in Week 3. Harvest protocol:
- Take only the 1–2 outermost, largest, fully unfurled leaves
- Leave the central new-leaf roll and the 2–3 most recently opened leaves intact
- The minimum leaf count on the plant after harvest: 4 leaves
- Always cook arvi leaves thoroughly — boil 15+ minutes or pressure cook; raw leaves cause throat irritation from oxalate crystals
Week 3 Pest — Taro Caterpillar (Spodoptera litura)
Spodoptera populations peak in Week 3 monsoon warmth. Check for semicircular notching on leaf margins — the characteristic feeding damage. Inspect leaf undersides for egg clusters (pale silvery scales arranged in rows). Night inspection with a torch is most effective since caterpillars hide in the soil by day.
Response: Handpick at dusk; drop in soapy water. Spray Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) solution for heavy infestations — it is safe for edible crops and specifically targets caterpillars.

Week 3 honest note: Arvi is one of the most reliable monsoon vegetables in India. It does not fail unless the drainage fails. Every Week 3 arvi problem — corm rot, stunted growth, yellowing — traces back to one cause: water sitting in the root zone too long. Fix the drainage and the plant fixes itself. Keep the drainage working and your arvi will reward you with a substantial corm harvest in October–November.
Arvi (Taro / Colocasia) Monsoon Week 4 Checkpoint (Jul 5 – Jul 18)
Monsoon Week 4 (July 5 – July 18) is the underground-yield fortnight for arvi — the two weeks when corm expansion either accelerates or stalls depending on how the garden was managed through Weeks 1–3. By Week 4, arvi plants across India are at or approaching maximum above-ground size. The leaf canopy has reached its peak; new leaf production is slowing; the plant's energy is redirecting from vegetative expansion toward starch storage in the developing corm. This is exactly the right trajectory — but it requires active support in Week 4.
Arvi Status by Stage — Week 4 Reality Check
April-planted arvi (now 14–16 weeks old): These are the most established arvi plants in the garden. In Week 4, they should show: 8–12 large elephant-ear leaves (40–60 cm) on upright petioles, with a clearly visible pseudostem of 5–7 cm diameter at the base. In Week 4, these plants are at the same stage April-planted arvi was in Week 3 — they are fully established and redirecting energy underground. Corm size at this stage: 4–6 cm diameter (too small to harvest, but measurably growing week by week).
Early June-planted arvi (now 6–8 weeks old): These are the youngest established plants. In Week 4, they should have 4–6 leaves and be entering the phase where corm formation begins. The Week 4 check for this batch is whether leaf production has continued without interruption — any gap in leaf emergence at this stage indicates root stress that needs to be addressed before the corm starts developing.
Week 4 — Potassium and the Corm
The single most impactful intervention a home gardener can make for arvi in Week 4 is a potassium application. Potassium (kalium, K) is the primary driver of starch synthesis and storage in root crops. An arvi corm that receives adequate potassium in Week 4 can be measurably heavier at the October harvest than one that did not.
Week 4 potassium options:
- Banana peel compost tea: Boil 6–8 banana peels in 3L water; cool; dilute 1:5 with water; pour around the root zone. This is the most available home option.
- Wood ash: 1 tablespoon broadcast around the root zone, then water in. Wood ash is alkaline — use only once, not repeatedly.
- Muriate of potash (MOP / 0-0-60): Available at agri input shops; 5–7g per plant broadcast and watered in. The most effective and reliable option.
- Potassium sulphate (SOP / 0-0-50): Slightly more expensive than MOP but also provides sulphur; same dose as MOP.
Do NOT feed nitrogen in Week 4. Nitrogen at this stage redirects growth energy from the corm back to leaves — which is the opposite of what you want in Week 4.
Week 4 Taro Caterpillar — Managing the Peak
Week 4 marks the peak of Spodoptera litura (taro caterpillar) pressure in most Indian monsoon zones. The second generation of this moth has hatched; the larvae are now 2–4 cm and voraciously feeding on arvi leaves. Signs of peak caterpillar pressure:
- Multiple leaves with large ragged holes (not the semicircular edge notches of early-instar feeding)
- Dark frass (droppings) visible on leaves
- Multiple 3–5 cm striped larvae visible in the leaf axils or at the soil surface near the pot at dusk
Week 4 caterpillar management protocol:
- Evening inspection (after 7 PM) with a torch — caterpillars feed at night
- Hand-pick all visible larvae into soapy water
- Bt spray (Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki) on leaf undersides — effective on larvae under 2 cm
- For large larvae (3–5 cm): Chlorpyrifos 20 EC at 0.5ml/L — one spray; withholding period 7 days before leaf harvest
- Maintain 7-day spray interval: neem oil (5ml/L) between chemical treatments to deter egg-laying moths

Week 4 honest note: Week 4 is when the arvi garden either coasts or gets better. Drainage management through Weeks 1–3 determines whether the plants are healthy enough to respond to Week 4 potassium. If the drainage was poor, Week 4 is a recovery window — fix the drainage first, then feed. If the drainage was good, Week 4 is a yield optimisation window — the potassium application now will show up as heavier corms in October. Monsoon Week 5 (July 19 – August 1) is the corm-building peak for arbi in India — the fortnight when the underground corms are growing most rapidly and the management decisions made now will determine the October harvest weight. By Week 5, well-established arbi plants have typically produced a full canopy of large, deeply veined leaves and the underground system has expanded significantly from the original planting. The monsoon’s reduced but still significant rainfall in Week 5 keeps the soil moisture ideal for corm expansion, and the slightly longer dry intervals between Week 5 rain events reduce the waterlogging risk that was the primary threat in Weeks 1–3.
Arbi Status — Week 5 Reality Check
May-planted arbi (14–16 weeks from planting): These plants are approaching their corm maturation window. Week 5 check: Are the oldest (outermost) leaves beginning to yellow at the tips? Tip yellowing on the oldest leaves in Week 5 is a normal senescence signal — the plant is beginning to redirect energy from canopy maintenance to corm storage.
