But shimla mirch is not the same as the chilli (mirchi) you might already be growing. It has a different sowing calendar, needs a different pot size, struggles with summer heat in ways hot varieties do not, and absolutely requires hand pollination when grown on enclosed balconies. Growing Step by Step

Step 1: Prepare seeds and germinate

Fill a small seed tray or 4-inch pot with damp coco peat. Sow seeds 1 cm deep, 2–3 seeds per cell. Cover lightly. Place in a warm (22–28°C), shaded spot — a shelf near a window works. Keep moist but not waterlogged.

Germination time: 7–14 days. Shimla mirch germinates slower than chilli — be patient.

Step 2: Care for seedlings

Once seedlings reach 4–5 cm with their first true leaves, thin to one per cell. Provide 4–5 hours of indirect morning sun. Water when the top 1 cm of coco peat feels dry. No fertilizer needed yet — coco peat and compost provide enough for the first 3 weeks.

Step 3: Transplant to final pot

Monsoon Survival Guide for Existing Plants (June–August)

If you sowed shimla mirch in February–March and your plants are now entering the monsoon (June–July), you are at a critical decision point. The plant is probably at peak size, carrying fruit, and about to face its hardest three months.

Do not start new plants now. The monsoon + heat combination defeats shimla mirch seeds. Wait for October. The guidance below is for managing plants already in the ground.

The 3 Monsoon Problems That Kill Shimla Mirch (and How to Prevent Each)

Problem 1: Anthracnose Fruit Rot

Anthracnose (Colletotrichum capsici) is the most destructive monsoon disease for capsicum in India.   • Put up a 40% shade cloth on the south/west side of the plant from 11 am–4 pm
