Kerala monsoon is now 11 days active (May 31, 2026). Turmeric rhizomes planted at monsoon onset (May 20–26) should show first shoots by Day 10–14. This is also the exact window when rhizome rot establishes — the swelling rhizome absorbs water, and any waterlogging at this stage is catastrophic.

Rhizome Rot Intervention — How to Diagnose: Gently remove one rhizome from the pot. The diagnosis is visual and tactile:

  • Firm, cream-white or pale yellow flesh = healthy. Re-bury and wait.
  • Soft, brown, or slimy zones = Pythium rot established. Cut off affected areas with a clean knife. Dust the cut surface with turmeric powder (natural antifungal) and re-plant in fresh, dry cocopeat mix.
  • Completely mushy = discard. Plant a fresh rhizome or wait until next March.

Day 11 Drainage Protocol:

  1. Elevate the pot on bricks — the base must be clear of any standing water
  2. If using a saucer, remove it completely until August
  3. Check that drainage holes are fully open (push a stick through if blocked)
  4. Add a 2 cm layer of coarse perlite on top of the soil to draw moisture upward

For rhizomes that have sprouted: Feed with a light vermicompost top-dress (1 cm layer around the base). Do NOT use liquid fertiliser — it leaches in monsoon rain. Water only when the top 3 cm of soil is dry.

Haldi / Turmeric Monsoon Week 2 Checkpoint (Jun 8–20)

Monsoon Week 2 (June 8–20) is the rhizome establishment window for turmeric across India. Turmeric planted at monsoon onset (May 20–June 1) is now 8–21 days into the ground. This is the period when the rhizome either establishes successfully or rots — and the outcome is determined almost entirely by drainage management in Week 2. Here is the Week 2 state-of-garden checkpoint.

Where Your Turmeric Should Be Right Now (by planting date)

May 20–31 plantings (8–21 days in ground): Turmeric sprouted at this stage should show 5–15 cm of green shoot above soil. If the shoot has reached 8+ cm, the rhizome has established a functional root system and survival risk drops significantly. Week 2 action: the most dangerous phase is now ending — but do not water at all if natural monsoon rain is providing moisture. Check that drainage holes are clear and that the pot or bed is not sitting in a puddle.

June 1–7 plantings (1–7 days in ground): The rhizome is in its most vulnerable window — actively sending out the first roots while sitting in warm, wet monsoon soil. The risk of Pythium root rot is highest in days 3–10. Keep the pot elevated on bricks at all times. Do not add any cover or mulch yet — the soil surface needs to breathe. If you see the soil surface developing a green algae crust (a sign of oxygen-poor, continuously wet soil), scratch the surface gently to break the crust and improve aeration.

Fresh Week 2 planting (June 8–14 — still viable): Turmeric planted now will still produce a full crop — the rhizome harvest is in November–December regardless of planting date within the June–July window. Select firm, plump rhizomes with at least 1–2 visible dormant buds. Pre-soak in a solution of Trichoderma viride (10g/L) for 30 minutes before planting — this biocontrol primes the rhizome against Pythium before it even goes in the ground.

Week 2 Drainage Protocol (Critical)

Turmeric is simultaneously a moisture-loving plant and one of the most rot-prone in waterlogged conditions. The contradiction is resolved by understanding the distinction: turmeric wants consistent moisture not standing water. In Week 2, sustained monsoon rain can push soil from optimal to waterlogged within 24–48 hours.

Daily drainage check:

  • Press the soil at 5 cm depth — it should feel damp but not wet enough to squeeze water out
  • Lift the pot and look at drainage holes — water should stop flowing within 5–10 minutes of a rain event
  • If the pot remains heavy and wet for more than 24 hours after the last rain, drainage is blocked

If drainage is failing:

  1. Elevate the pot higher — 2–3 bricks height to ensure free airflow below the pot
  2. Probe the drainage holes with a chopstick or stick — they block with soil particles in heavy rain
  3. In extreme cases: tip the pot out, check the rhizome (any soft mushy sections = trim with clean knife, dust with turmeric powder or sulphur, dry 2 hours), add a drainage layer of coarse pebbles at the base, repot in fresh mix

Week 2 Action Checklist

  1. Elevate pots on bricks — mandatory if not already done; this is the single most important Week 2 action
  2. Check shoot emergence — at 8–21 days, 70–80% of planted rhizomes should show a shoot; if none visible at Day 14, probe gently to check for rot
  3. Do NOT fertilise — turmeric at this stage is establishing roots only; any fertiliser application in waterlogged Week 2 conditions leaches immediately and does nothing
  4. Remove standing water within 30 minutes of rain — saucers, drainage trays, and sunken pot bases must be kept dry
  5. Inspect for fungus gnats — the moist cocopeat soil surface attracts fungus gnats; their larvae damage young turmeric roots; preventive measure: neem cake pinch on soil surface
  6. Move under partial cover during heavy downpour — not to avoid all rain, but to prevent the pot becoming completely saturated during a 3–4 hour monsoon cloudburst

Realistic Turmeric Week 2 Harvest Expectations

Turmeric has a long growing season — there is no harvest in Week 2 itself. Harvest is in November–December when the leaves yellow and die back naturally. Week 2 is purely an establishment period. The Week 2 actions directly determine the size and quality of the November harvest:

  • Rhizomes that establish without rot in Week 2 will multiply 3–5x by November (1 rhizome planted → 3–5 rhizomes harvested)
  • Rhizomes that suffer partial rot in Week 2 will still often survive but produce smaller, fewer rhizomes (1× or 2× return vs 3–5×)
  • Rhizomes that fully rot in Week 2 need to be replanted from fresh stock immediately — June 8–14 is still within the viable planting window

What healthy Week 2 turmeric looks like: A well-established 10–14 day old turmeric plant has a firm, upright green shoot 5–15 cm tall with the first leaf beginning to unfurl. The base of the shoot at soil level is firm (not soft) and slightly swollen where the rhizome connects. If this is what you see, your turmeric is on track for a strong monsoon growing season.
