The papaya gardener who makes that hard call in Week 5 — rather than hoping the soft-stem plant somehow recovers — will have fruit in January. The one who waits will have neither.

Papaya Status — Week 6 Reality Check

Plants that passed the Week 5 trunk assessment (firm, no soft zones): These are the plants that will deliver the October–November harvest. By Week 6, a healthy June-planted papaya should be 1.5–2.5 m tall with an active crown of 8–12 leaves, visibly developing fruits if male–female pairing was successful, or a self-fertile hermaphrodite variety with developing fruits at the leaf axils. Week 6 check: Count the developing fruits. A healthy plant should have 3–8 fruits in various stages of development. Monsoon Week 7 (August 16 – August 31) is the late-monsoon stability and ring spot vigilance fortnight for papaya — when plants established in April–May are deep into their fruiting cycle with developing papayas at various stages on the trunk, the monsoon's sustained humidity creates peak conditions for Papaya Ring Spot Virus (PRSV) spread by aphid vectors, and the post-monsoon flowering flush that will fill September–October must be managed proactively. Papaya's rapid growth and early fruiting (flowering within 3–4 months of germination for Red Lady and similar hybrids) means that a May-established papaya plant is a mature, fruiting specimen by Week 7 — and the decisions made now about viral disease management and trunk health determine whether it remains productive through the end of the year.

Week 7 — Fruiting Assessment and Harvest Timing

A papaya plant established in April–May and growing vigorously through the monsoon should have 5–10 developing fruits on the trunk by Week 7, at various stages of maturity from small 3–5 cm green globes just above the leaf crown to larger 10–20 cm fruits lower on the trunk approaching harvest.

The threat to that generosity is not care complexity but PRSV: one aphid, one infected weed, one neighbour's sick papaya.
