Why Giloy is the Easiest Ayurvedic Vine to Grow
Most medicinal plants require specific conditions. Giloy does not.
It grows in shade. North-facing balconies that rule out tulsi, moringa, or ashwagandha are perfectly suitable for giloy. Partial shade (3–4 hours of direct sun) is enough for healthy growth. How to Propagate Giloy from Cuttings
Propagation from cuttings is the standard method. Seeds are rarely used and take longer.
Step 1: Take a cutting

Common Problems
Yellow leaves across the vine
Most likely: Overwatering. Check if soil is staying wet between waterings. Ensure drainage holes are clear. Reduce watering frequency.

Cutting not rooting

Week 10 — Vine Assessment: October Structure Review
The giloy vine enters its post-monsoon phase in October. Growth rate slows significantly. This is the ideal window for a full structural assessment.
Week 10 vine structure inspection:
- Walk the entire extent of the vine, from root base to all running tips, and assess total stem volume, attachment points, and any structural crossing or damage
- Identify stems that are mechanically weak: thin, whippy, or frost-damaged (if applicable in your zone) stems should be removed now rather than waiting for them to collapse in winter
- Check all attachment points (trellises, wall hooks, string supports) — the vine's reduced growth rate in October means any weakened support will be static until the next monsoon; repair now
- Container giloy: assess root mass through drainage holes; if roots are circling densely, October is the best repotting window before winter semi-dormancy

- October kadha: the decoction will be notably more bitter than monsoon-period preparations — this is the alkaloid concentration; it is correct
Week 10 — Runner Management: Final Containment
Any runners not fully managed in Week 9 should be addressed in the first week of October before growth rate slows further and stems harden.
Week 10 runner status:
- Growth rate in Week 10 is 20–40% of peak monsoon rate; runners that escaped in Week 9 are now 50–100 cm longer than at the end of September
- Cut escaped runners at the last clean attachment point; remove all sections extending beyond the containment zone
- If runners have attached to and are now climbing adjacent plants or structures, cut at the base of the runner (not at the attachment point) and allow the attached portion to desiccate in place — removal risks structural damage to the attached plant or surface
- October is the last opportunity for runner management before the vine settles into its winter growth pattern — runners not managed now will resume from their terminal growth points in March 2027
Week 10 — Watering and Feeding: October Reduction
Week 10 watering protocol:
- Container giloy: water every 6–8 days; allow the top 7–10 cm of soil to dry between waterings; October evapotranspiration is significantly lower than monsoon
- Ground-planted giloy: no supplemental watering needed in most Indian zones through October; residual monsoon soil moisture is sufficient for the vine's reduced October demand
- If October is unusually dry in your region (Rajasthan, Gujarat, parts of Maharashtra): one deep watering (20–30L at root zone) in the first week of October is sufficient for the month

North India (Delhi, UP, Punjab): October in North India brings the giloy vine to its most management-efficient state — growth slowed, alkaloids at peak, drying conditions perfect. Complete all drying and storage in Week 10. November–December in North India will bring temperatures below 15°C, which slow giloy growth to near-zero; the vine is preparing for this. No further management needed until February.
South India (Kerala, Tamil Nadu): The NE monsoon arriving in October may bring rain to South India, extending the growth season. South Indian giloy may still be actively growing and adding stem mass through October; harvesting in Week 10 in Kerala and coastal Tamil Nadu is entirely appropriate. The alkaloid peak arrives slightly later in South India — Week 10 is the correct harvest window here.
Maharashtra and Karnataka: Post-monsoon October in Pune and inland Karnataka is ideal — low humidity, strong sun, good drying conditions. The vine is consolidating. Complete drying of all September-harvested sections; take any final fresh-use harvest in the first week of October.

Realistic Week 10 Giloy Expectations

A container giloy in Week 10: Compact vine, well-supported; watering every 6–8 days; root assessment done through drainage holes; no new runner extension; well-dried stem sections in labelled storage pouches.
A vine that was not harvested in Weeks 8–9: Still manageable in early Week 10 (Oct 1–7); cut and process now before the potency window closes; stems harvested after October 15 are still usable but of lower medicinal concentration than the September–early October peak.
Week 10 honest note: The giloy vine in October is like a library being reorganised after a busy season. The growth is finished; the production is in storage; the next cycle is months away. The gardener who managed this vine well through ten monsoon weeks — who harvested at peak, who dried correctly, who managed the runners and the mealybugs — now has 500g to 1kg of genuinely potent dried giloy in cloth storage bags that will provide medicinal benefit to the household through the winter and spring. The vine itself, green and resting against its trellis in the October sun, has already begun preparing for the 2027 monsoon. So has the gardener.
Giloy Monsoon Week 11 Checkpoint (Oct 16 – Oct 31)
Monsoon Week 11 (October 16 – October 31) is the giloy grower's season close and winter preparation fortnight — the two weeks when the vine transitions from post-harvest storage completion to the dormancy management that will keep the corm and root system healthy through November–February. Week 11 is not a harvest window (all significant giloy harvest should have concluded by October 10–15); it is a consolidation and preparation window. The decisions made in Week 11 about vine structure, watering, and cold protection determine whether the giloy plant enters 2027 from a position of strength or has to fight back from a compromised root system.
Week 11 — Final Storage Audit
Before turning attention to the vine's winter management, complete the storage audit of the entire monsoon season's harvest.
Week 11 storage assessment protocol:
- Open all storage pouches (cotton or muslin) and inspect the dried giloy stem sections; any that have developed mould, softness, or discoloration should be removed and composted — they will not regain quality

Week 11 — Vine Structure Review
The giloy vine in Week 11 has completed its growing season. The structure review ensures the vine is correctly positioned for the coming dormancy and the spring growth flush.
Week 11 vine inspection checklist:
- Walk the full vine extent from base to growing tips; note any dead, brown, or hollow-feeling stem sections — these are end-of-season die-back and should be cut cleanly; they will not contribute to next year's growth

- From November 1 onwards, further reduce to every 12–15 days for containers; ground-planted vines need no supplemental water through the cool season in most Indian climates

Maharashtra and Gujarat (Pune, Mumbai, Nashik): Pune giloy in Week 11 is still in active metabolic state — temperatures remain above 20°C through October. The vine may continue slow lateral growth through November. Watering can be maintained at every 7–8 days for containers. No cold protection needed at Pune elevations.
South India (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka): The NE monsoon's moisture is providing natural irrigation in coastal zones. Giloy in South India may show active growth through November; the "winter slowdown" that North Indian growers experience does not apply. In South India, Week 11 is simply another growing fortnight — monitor for the mealybug population that can rebuild in post-monsoon conditions and treat with neem oil if detected.

Realistic Week 11 Giloy Expectations
A well-managed vine in Week 11: Vine structure reviewed and secured; all dead material pruned; all 2026 monsoon harvest in dry, correctly stored cotton pouches or glass jars; watering shifted to very low frequency; cold protection mulch applied (North India); the vine itself green but visibly slowing, resting against its trellis with the quiet purposefulness of a plant that has already decided it will do this again next year.
A vine that was not significantly harvested during the monsoon: Still has stem sections available; take a small final harvest in Week 11 (Oct 16–20) from lateral branches; process and store correctly; the vine's medicinal value is not diminished by late harvest — October alkaloid concentration remains high even without the peak August–September timing.
Week 11 honest note: The giloy vine in Week 11 asks very little. It has been one of the most self-sufficient plants in the Indian medicinal garden through the entire monsoon — growing vigorously without feeding, tolerating the waterlogging that would kill other plants, managing pest pressure through its own natural bitterness. In Week 11, all it needs is for its grower to step back, reduce the water, and let it rest. Giloy Monsoon Week 12 Checkpoint (Nov 1 – Nov 15)
Week 12 (November 1 – November 15) is the full dormancy-entry fortnight for giloy in India — the period when the vine significantly slows its outward growth, the stored alkaloids in stem sections reach their peak winter concentration, and the grower's role transitions from active management to watchful patience. Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia) is one of the few Indian medicinal plants that does not require a complete winter rest — the vine maintains its green leaf cover through mild winters and retreats fully underground only in severe North Indian cold. November is the threshold: the vine is not dead, not dormant, and not growing at monsoon speed. It is consolidating.
Week 12 — Vine Status: November Assessment
Healthy giloy vine in Week 12:
- Leaves: mature, dark green, heart-shaped; some older basal leaves naturally yellowing and dropping — this is normal seasonal shedding, not disease
- Stems: semi-woody; the characteristic aerial root nodules (the greenish-white protrusions on mature stems) are prominent; these are storage organs, not disease indicators

Week 12 — The Winter Alkaloid Peak: Medicinal Value at Maximum
November–January is the highest medicinal potency window for giloy stem. As the plant slows its growth, it concentrates its primary alkaloids — tinosporin, berberine, palmatine — in the stem tissue rather than distributing them across active new growth. The stem section harvested in November carries a denser alkaloid load than the same stem in the active monsoon growth period.
If you did not harvest during the main season (August–October): November 1–7 is your final opportunity for a high-potency harvest before the vine enters its deepest rest. Week 12 — Pest Watch: Mealybug November Management
Mealybug (Planococcus citri and related species): The primary November pest threat for giloy. As temperatures drop, mealybugs — which are heat-sensitive at very high temperatures — establish colonies in the leaf axils and along stems, producing the characteristic white waxy secretion. November's cooler temperatures are ideal for their establishment.
Detection: White cottony clusters at points where leaf petioles meet stems; honeydew deposits below colonies attracting ants; yellow distortion of leaves near colonies.
Treatment:
- Remove accessible colonies with a firm water jet or isopropyl alcohol swab
- Apply neem oil spray (3ml/L + 1ml/L liquid soap) to all affected areas; repeat after 5 days
- Check for ant trails leading to colonies — ants protect mealybugs; disrupt ant access with a sticky tree-banding wrap on the main stem
Why avoiding systemic insecticide matters for giloy: Unlike ornamental plants, giloy is a medicinal herb consumed directly. Systemic insecticides absorbed into stem tissue will be present in kadha prepared from treated stems. Use only contact treatments (neem, alcohol, water jet) and observe a minimum 4-week clearance period before medicinal use.
Week 12 — Storage Audit: The November Quality Check
All stems harvested during August–October should be checked in Week 12:
Correctly stored dried stem sections: Hard, light-brown to grey, with a faint bitter-earthy smell; no mould; a slight scratch of the bark reveals pale green interior tissue. These are medicinal-grade and shelf-stable for 12–18 months.
Stems showing mould or softness: Spread in single layer in full sun for 2–3 days to fully dry; if mould cannot be eliminated, discard — mouldy giloy stem is not medicinally usable.
Freshness test for November kadha: Select a 10 cm section, crush lightly, and steep in hot water (not boiling) for 10 minutes. The colour should be a deep amber-yellow; the taste intensely bitter with a warming aftertaste. If the colour is pale and the taste is weak, the stems were either too young, too fresh, or are degraded — use them for external application (poultice) rather than internal consumption.
Week 12 Regional Notes
North India (Delhi, UP, Punjab, Rajasthan): Week 12 is the last active window before the vine enters its November–February rest. Complete cold protection measures by November 12; reduce watering to every 12–15 days; do the mealybug inspection. From mid-November, the vine will show little change week to week — this is correct. The corm is alive, waiting for March. No intervention needed until late February.
South India (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh): The giloy vine in South India does not enter true dormancy. Week 12 growth continues at a slow but measurable pace. NE monsoon rain is handling irrigation. Monitor for mealybug. Light harvest (3–5% of stem volume) can continue through November for fresh kadha use. The medicinal concentration is at its seasonal peak in November.
Maharashtra (Pune, Nashik, Mumbai): Pune giloy experiences genuine November slowdown (cooler nights, 10–14°C). Apply cold protection mulch and reduce watering to every 10–12 days from November 10. Mumbai coastal giloy follows the South India protocol — no cold protection needed.
Week 12 Action Checklist

Week 12 honest note: The giloy vine in November is doing what the most sophisticated medicinal plants do: it is making itself more valuable by doing less. The alkaloids that accumulated through the frenetic monsoon growth are now concentrating in the stem tissue as the vine slows. The grower who harvests a November stem section, crushes it, and steeps it in hot water is working with the most potent giloy the plant can offer — richer than the June cutting, more concentrated than the August flush.
